SCRAPBOOK EXPRESSED

I want to express myself artistically?

I doodle quite a lot and recently have thought about creating a sketchbook. However I don’t see the point. Sure I can express myself but what’s the point in having a sketchbook?
I wanted to create some pop up work and scrapbook pages as well as drawings about various different topics but I just can’t see the point.

I hope you can help.

With most artists, their Original intentions have been simply to express themselves. However, most find a hidden talent which can lead to them becoming world famous artists. And you be asking yourself why should you create a scrapbook? but instead ask yourself, why not?

Is there any way to make those alcohol inks that scrapbookers and crafters use?

Is it possible to just mix liquid ink (like from caligraphy pen cartridges or ink used by artists) with rubbing alcohol for a similar effect? Has anyone tried making their own alcohol inks? I love the look of them, but I don’t want to pay $10 or more for three little bottles. Any suggestions?

Alcohol-based inks are intensely-colored, transparent, acid-free, alcohol-based colorants (dyes). I don’t know what else you could use, but here’s one thing that someone suggested at my site:

I’ve made my own alcohol-based inks with a square of pre-colored watercolor sheets (they come in a 2×5" booklet with a yellow cover…) …and some alcohol in a film canister…..works pretty well since the watercolor sheets are also translucent and saturated. Carolyn

I also found this exchange:

<Lilo> I saw on one of the sites that you can make your own Alcohol inks by mixing half Rit dye and half rubbing alcohol.
<Tarot_afk> if they dry out you just reconstitute
easiest ink is tempura paint powder … add alcohol
or glycerin til you get the consistancy you want
… i put mine into plastic containers or bottles
…if you use glycerine you can (hot) emboss

<Tarot_afk> you can also mix it them with those glycerine inks that come in tiny jars

You can also add particulate things into or onto the alcohol inks … like mica powders or real-metal powders, chalks, etc

Don’t forget that you can mix the alcohol ink colors just like you would mix paints to get many additional colors (though Pinatas will be clearest… Adirondacks are already "toned" down). And it often doesn’t take much ink at all to do a lot of things since the color is so intense.

(There are also alcohol-based markers –Prisma, etc.).

What is the best photoshop program to use for scrapbooking?

I ha ve been scrapbooking for several yrs. But I would love to start digital scrapbooking because I am so busy with clinicals right now and cant find time to scrap. I have no idea where to begin as far as what program to start with so I am seeking advice from anyone who is familiar with digital scrapbooking and or photoshop . Thanks Michelle

Here are some suggestions:

1. Use the online scrapbooking site CropMom.com, where there’s no software to buy and no digital scrapbooking kits to buy. Just make your layout online using your photos and any of CropMom.com’s thousands of scrapbook graphics. You can purchase the high-resolution layouts for a small fee (or, better yet, purchase a package of layouts for less money) then you can print them anywhere you’d like.

2. Adobe Photoshop Elements can be use to create digital scrapbook pages and is often used by beginneers who have advanced beyond CropMom. That said, there is a learning curve with learning how to use Photoshop Elements to create a digital scrapobok page, so be prepared to spend time learning how to do it.

3. Corel Paint Shop Pro is harder to learn than Photoshop Elements but has more features.

4. Adobe Photoshop is the most powerful of all of the graphics software for digital scrapbooking but it is quite expensive and very difficult to learn.

5. Microsoft Digital Image Pro used to be one of the choices for digital scrapbookers, but I am fairly certain it has been discontinued. That said, perhaps you even have a coyp of it at home if it came with a scanner or something, so I thought I’d mention it.

Finally, both Corel and Adobe offer a free trial of their products, so make sure you test them out to see if you like them before spending the money on them. Also, I would suggest you try CropMom, too, since it’s free. That way, you’ll have a better feel for what’s out there.

How do I make a scrapbook cover using a transperancy?

I recently purchased this amazing 12 x 12 transperancy for my scrapbook album, but would like to use it as my cover. I have no idea what type of scrapbook album to buy and how I would be able to make it stick. I don’t want to use a 3 ring binder with a clear cover… I want something more classy. I would like to make this album my own unique piece of memories. Please help!

I would get a chip board album. They come in all different sizes. Even 12×12. You can get them at your local craft store or look on line. You can go to google and type in "chip board albums". A ton of sites will pop up that have them for sale. They are made specially for scrapping the cover. It depends on what the transparency looks like but you could possibly use vellum tape to adhere it or a clear drying glue. I hope this helps.

I like to keep a journal and I have bought tons of notebooks because I like the paper in them…?

I also have 2 really nice empty journals. When I do my journal, I like to do it like a scrapbook, whereas I put pictures, stickers and cut-outs in it to express what I’m saying. That’s really easy to do in a notebook, but I also have 2 brand new journals.
Should I start my new journal in them or stick to my notebooks?

Decide on a special time to begin one of the brand new journals, Easter? The first day of Summer? Joyfully anticipate the adventure.

I hoarded books-too-good-for-me-to-use for decades before daring to actually use them. It’s a "trip" to consume them.

If a page is overly fat, remove all but the 1/4" or 1/2" next to the spine on the next page. See how things go. You can always do the next one in a notebook again instead and it’ll be an "informed choice", rather than the same-old-comfortable thing.

where do the digital scrapbookers get their graphics? do they draw them all by hand in photoshop?

what software is needed if they are hand drawn? what type of education or classes can someone take to learn this art?

well, if you live in US they have michael’s sometimes they have scrapbook lesson, and collage always good (cut pieces from something, ex:magazine, and glue it all together), and if you want clip art, illustrator offer better, and good thing is that you can scale it up and not getting pixelated

Scrapbooking: What’s the best organization items or scrapbooking tools you’ve purchased?

I love scrapbooking. I’d like to know the best ways to organize everything and your favorite tools. Especially if someone has purchased, or designed a desk or area to scrapbook at. Thanks!

my fav’s:
1. grage sale kitchen table 40×40 perfect size for working on plus all the "crap" I end up dragging out.
2. IKEA’s rod and hanging baskests and hooks.
3. IKEA’s kitchen knife magnet strips. stong enough to hold dies, and tins without slipping off.

4. The best of all, hubby picked up from a school that was remodeling, an old in-box for teachers mail. You know the ones in the office with all the slots for teachers mail. 40 slots, each one holds 1 IRIS plastic box. Best way to store paper, flowers, alphabets, ink etc… I painted it and had a piece of glass cut for the top to protcet it. I keep pic’s under the glass and all my Jim Holt tins ontop. Looks great and very functional.

EDIT: also love the bar height table hubby made for me. Just 20 inches deep, but 5 feet long. Has a tile top. Great for laying out stuff when I come home from shopping, or for deciding on a layout before I sit and do it. Also good for use as a die cut center. able to stand straight up, no more aching back from making a zillion letters for something.
